Ioannis Kalatzis

Prof. I. Kalatzis received his BSc degree in Physics from the University of Athens in 1987 and his PhD degree in Medical Physics from the Medical School of the University of Athens in 2000. During his PhD thesis, he was involved in tomographic image processing in the Nuclear Medicine department of the Hippokrateio General Hospital of Athens and in research projects concerning image processing and pattern recognition applications in medicine.

He is a Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering of the University of West Attica, Athens Greece in the field of Medical Image and Signal Processing and Analysis; moreover, he was for many years in the teaching staff in postgraduate courses related to medical statistics, pattern recognition and biomedical image and signal processing & analysis in the University of Athens, the University of Patras and the Technological Educational Institute of Athens.

Prof. Kalatzis has 62 publications in scientific journals and book chapters with impact factor, 107 publications in international and national conferences, and 1 academic book. His research work is recognized by the international scientific community with over 800 citations excluding the self-citations of all authors (Scopus, h-index=15). He was the coordinator or primer investigator in many funded research projects by the Greek government and/or the European Union and he is the author of the academic book “Algorithmic Programming in MATLAB Environment”, I. Sideris Athens 2016.

Prof. Kalatzis’s research interests include medical image and signal processing and analysis, with a focus on the field of pattern recognition, as a member of the Artificial-computational Intelligence and Multidisciplinary Applications (ACIMA) Laboratory, University of West Attica and associate member of the Medical Image and Signal Processing (MEDISP) Laboratory, University of West Attica.

Prof. Kalatzis has been elected Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering of the University of West Attica for 2019-2021 and 2021-2023.
